#Mycwgi101iwd2017 - Emily Duffett
On December 3, we acknowledged International Day for Persons with Disabilities. This is something that touches our lives daily. Every one of us knows of someone with a disability. Whether in our family, friends or acquaintance. My aunt Lucille was disabled and yet, she was formidable and fiercely independent. My husband became disabled in 2007.
Among the those in my circle of women who have influenced me is my colleague and friend Emily Duffett. I have known her for some time and each time I'm in her company, I learn something new. We sat on the "#AbilityStartsHere" conference planning committee for several years and most we briefly attended evening class together. Emily is energetic, fun and definitely knows her own mind. She's passionate about supporting students with disabilities and wants to ensure that they have the best possible chance life has to offer and what it means to be successful. Just in the same way her parents taught her. She was taught that her disability was not a barrier to what she wanted to achieve in her life. She would say her sibilings treated her no different. She was in the thick of things with them. They all got into trouble together.
A university graduate herself, Emily knows only too well the challenges faced by persons with disabilities but she is not deterred. She has her own consultancy and together with her business partner, they are on a quest to raise awareness and educate others.
I'm very proud she is in my circle of women who have influenced me.
